Cooking-related incidents are the leading cause of fires in student accommodation, with the 17-24 age group experiencing a higher rate of non-fatal fire-related injuries than those aged 55-69. The need for fire prevention technology is clear, but traditional reactive protection methods, including fire and smoke alarms are prone to false alarms. Students not only find these false alarms disruptive to study and sleep, but also develop complacency around fire safety as a result of frequent false alarms.
Installing Airis stove guards to bring smart, proactive fire protection to 568 hobs across student residences. Airis Technology monitors heat levels, human presence, and cooking patterns to detect fire risk and automatically shuts off power to the stove to stop cooking fires before they start.
By preventing cooking fires and reducing smoke, students are safer and less likely to experience false alarms. Frequent false alarms can increase risk by causing 'alarm immunity', where students become desensitised and fail to react appropriately. The Airis from Unicook is certified to EN 50615 and was chosen for its high reliability, robustness, and fail-safe design.
